Jack sipped the glass of water. ‘Thank you.’

‘Are you okay?’ Becca sat on the edge of the coffee table, Amy and Madilyn on her flank.

‘Yeah,’ he replied, softly. ‘I don’t want to put you three in a tough spot, but is there any chance we could not tell Tessa about this?’

‘Nope,’ said Madilyn, plainly. ‘This kind of shit needed to stop years ago, Jack. Tessa doesn’t want another ten years of your antics.’

‘I know, I know,’ he conceded.

‘Rest for a couple of minutes if you need it, then I think you should leave,’ said Becca, aiming for an assertive tone. Jack nodded and the others moved into the foyer where they formed a huddle.

‘Do we need to keep an eye on him?’ whispered Becca. She didn’t get any unnerving vibes from Jack, but she asked the question anyway.

Madilyn sighed. ‘No ...’ she said, matching Becca’s volume. ‘He’s mostly harmless.’

‘You don’t seem like a fan,’ Amy observed.

‘I’ve met him a few times. He always rubbed me the wrong way, thinking he was top shit.’

‘Is that why he has been so on-and-off with Tessa?’ asked Becca.

Madilyn shrugged. ‘Part of it ... He’s also the kind of guy to wake up hung over on her front lawn.’

‘Point taken. So, why does she keep taking him back?’ Becca chanced a look over her shoulder, ensuring Jack wasn’t listening in. He sat massaging his temples, seemingly trying to undo the damage of last night’s poor decision making.

‘Because when it comes to Jack, Tessa’s vagina does the thinking.’

Knock, knock, knock.

The sudden noise startled Becca. Through the opaque glass, they could all see someone standing on the front veranda.

‘Since when are you so jumpy?’ asked Amy, turning to answer the door.

Before Becca could object, the door opened to reveal a woman wearing a loose white blouse and jeans. Her skin was almost as pale as Madilyn’s and her eyes appeared bloodshot as though she had been crying.

Becca sighed with relief. The lingering sense of danger had not subsided, but she knew this woman was not the threat she was sensing.

‘Hello?’ asked Amy, confused.

Becca looked to Madilyn, wondering if this was another one of Tessa’s toxic relationships. Based on Madilyn’s expression, she was as clueless as the rest of them.

‘Sorry, I drove by and saw people were home. I was wondering if Tessa was available ... please,’ said the woman, speaking in an English accent.

‘Sorry, she’s at work today.’

The woman closed her eyes, her face tensing as she fought back tears. ‘I need help.’

‘Well, like I said ... Tessa isn’t here,’ Amy said awkwardly, as she went to close the door. ‘Sorry.’

‘No!’ The woman’s hand stopped the door in its tracks. ‘You can help me. Please!’ She had gone from sad to desperate.

Madilyn gently nudged Amy. ‘Get rid of her.’

Amy acknowledged Madilyn with a nod, looking back at the woman. ‘You will leave ... now.’

‘Maybe try Tessa’s phone!’ Becca quickly interjected, saddled with a tinge of sympathy.

‘I know you are witches!’ the woman barked, ignoring Amy’s command, her hand still pressed against the wooden door.
